Funk Carioca 2009 Mixtape (HTML→MP3)
Actually not much happened in the Funk Carioca scene in 2009, already mentioned here for example. Most of the tracks use the aquecimento beat, vocals are just reduced frases and shouts and the lyrics are mostly putaria. But fortunately there have been some interesting tracks as well for different reasons, but especially some that are mixed with or refer to other music styles. Check the brief information that comes with the tracks.

dj Zhao - NGOMA 3 - Zulu House (MP3)
while staying in the same territory as 2, the journey is not the same, and many things make this one unique: the psychedelic motorik genius of Dj Clock's "Durban Guitar"; the monolithic, earth shaking visions of Black Coffee; DJ Sdoko's ominous Kraftwerkian phuture; Manya's soul stirring take on traditonal Angolan melodies; a surprisingly wicked banger from the Dutch DJ Bigga (UK is not the only place currently Afro minded), and ending with Sami vocal style from Mari Boine, reinterpreting the sound of indigenous Norway*. most of the selection are not well known or commonly used tracks in the "scene", with only one exception: just could not stay away from the Yellowtail (but check how it is used before you complain). concerning the anti-apartheid and war samples used through out the mix: the struggle for freedom from colonialism is the context which gave rise to contemporary South African music: Kwaito was born amidst antagonism and bloodshed, and has led to the current house music scene. thus songs such as "100 Zulu Warriors" and the radio broadcast at the end should not be taken as an incitement of racial conflict (especially in light of last year's wave of horrible xenophobia) but as a reminder of the political realities of the Apartheid era from which this music comes. *you might think it strange to include a traditional song from northern Europe on an Afrocentric project, but 1. thematically it fits the recording as the vocalist has for decades fought for equal rights of her people, who have long been the subject of discrimination, like South Africans, in their homeland; and 2. Henrich Schwartz who made the remix is a producer certainly with a lot of Africa on his mind.

MP-022 Baile Funk VS Kuduro Soundsystems (MP3)
Mr Phipson is back in 2007 and keeps it up with the incredible podcast series. This time I digged in all digital crates and created a massive »MixTape«, well mixtape is not really a correct expression cause it ain't a tape but an podcast episode. Enjoy 60 minutes of urban, ghetto sounds from the favelas and shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Angola. I selected two genres of urban pressure sounds from portuguese speakin' countries. Brazilian Baile Funk Carioca meets up with Kuduro from Angola and Lisbon, Portugal. For me both styles are very similiar with attitude and technique, though the sound is way different. Funk Carioca with its typical »tamborzao« (heavy drum sounds) and broken beats fits perfectly in a mix with 4-to-the-floor Kuduro beats. Both styles are produced very often by DJs in bedroom studios (like my podcast radio show ;-) Kuduro is a kind of mixture between House, Hip Hop and Ragga elemtens, the beats are in a similiar pattern like Reggaeton beats of Panama/Puerto Rico but are much faster and mostly 'round 140 BPM, while Funk Carioca or Baile Funk is around the 130s BPM a little side information for the techy geeks among open minded music friends.

MP-019 Barraco Breaks - Rio Baile Funk (MP3)
Baile Funk massive, cuts antigos and new tracks straight from the morros of Rio. Some tracks really sound handmade, do it yourself style, there's definately some Tunes that makes your booty bounce. I wonder how people climb up to their barracos when they live on top of the favela. I call this session »Barraco Breaks«, you call those little house on the favela hills like that. Stay tuned with Mr Phipson for the freshest Baile Funk Carioca and tune in to the incredible podcast.

MP-016 Special Tape Cutz - Baile Funk Mix 94 FM Rio de Janeiro (MP3)
This is a very special tape i recorded with a little tape deck when i was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in summer 2002. It's a wicked Baile Funk show mixed by Furacao 2000 on 94 FM in Rio de Janeiro. I am sorry for the "cassette" quality but it's taken from a tape that was lying around in a car for 4 years. There are a bunch of Baile Funk anthems on this radio mix, the way the cariocas like it. This ain't any UK mix show it's originally from Brazil. Vai dançar!

Mr Phipson | original Rio Baile Funk (MP3)
Recent episode of the podcast, Short Mix of original Rio Baile Funk tracks, one surprise track inside, dating back from oldschool times. JJ fad, remember the beat box in the beginning of the track? Ruff and raw stuff. The qualitiy of some Baile Funk Tracks is pretty poor, well i suppose that people don't havve the proper means of producing equipment, but that makes the sound interesting. subscribe to the podcast, put this adress in your favourite podcatcher: http://mrphipson.podspot.de/rss
