Paul Wenzel - Sights and Sounds of May Day 2008 (MP3)
Last Sunday, the annual Minneapolis May Day Parade marched through the Powderhorn neighborhood. I captured sounds from the parade, hastily editing down the hour-long event to 20 minutes. Drop a note on my blog if you liked it, thanks!

After a very long absence I am finally posting a new mix--light cycles. I love repetition in music–-music that uses the constant repetition of notes or themes or sounds as a basic structure to the composition. I wanted to put together a mix where all of the pieces used repetition as a major part of the cut. I also wanted to use pieces that had an “ambient” feel to them but that also were bright or upbeat. The title of the mix was inspired by the movie Tron. light cycles starts out fairly slow and quiet but becomes more vibrant as it goes along. Near the end it almost rocks out with an amazing piece I stumbled across by Can. The Can piece Future Days uses repetition to great effect. This piece is also cool because it was done back in 1973 but still sounds amazingly contemporary. I hope you enjoy light cycles. Like the last several mixes it is somewhat of a departure from the typical ambient drift and drone but I think it still evokes “ambient-ness” throughout the piece. Tracklisting, links, cover art and music score available on my blog (see Source below).

It's a tribute to Albert Hoffmann (who died at 102 last week, RIP) & the acid generation. Tracklist is too large for posting here but it's a similiar style of MILF WEED (http://colonelmustardrecords.com/DJHDD/WEED/). It's a challenging bombardment of disembodied voices over ambient music, taken from the acid generation of the 50's & 60's. Starting off with Albert's Bicycle Ride, an audio representation of his accidental ingestion of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, we hear the sound of him peddling his bike towards the very first LSD psychedelic trip. Sounding like the bastard offspring of the KLF & the Orb, they are ambient & sound representations of what it might be like tripping. Later in the mix we hear from Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, students involved in the laboratory tests & various authoritative voice overs appropriated from that era. A Paranoid Bad Trip gets captured by the CIA; the Hallucination Generation goes into Hippie Revolt & a classroom of high school students show No Fear discussing taking LSD & those freaky chromosomes. Colors become complete in a Monogramatic World. American Military troops (normal soldiers) loose control & laugh senseless into Alice Trenton's long trip into Acidland.

I don't really like berlin school music much anymore. I used to love that style. The first electronic music that I bought was Tangerine Dream & Jean Michel Jarre. I liked both of those artists for a long time. Eventually I think I just became bored with that style of electronic music. Recently, however, I've been re-discovering some berlin-type music. It started with the latest Steve Roach release, Arc of Passion. I've been enjoying the album quite a bit so I dug up some other berlin school or nearly berlin tunes to throw into a mix. Of course there is a cut from Arc of Passion as well as another Roach tune, "Sundial", which I absolutely love. Add in some old T-Dream, Klaus Schulze, Richard Pinhas(3 tunes) and I'm good to go. The Tangerine Dream cuts are from an old cassette that I had of "Hyperborea" which I used to play constantly 10 to 15 years ago. The mix also includes Arp, Solvent, Detroit Escalator Co. & Robert Rich.

The Chola- Good Morning Space Travelers 02-08-08 (HTML→MP3)
This month I decided it was time to get back to my roots and dive in to a more progressive side of downtempo music. I am a HUGE fan of deep, Progressive House/ Breakbeat music and I have been for over a decade. It is nice to see that a lot of what make progressive music, well, "progressive," is also utilized quite often in downtempo and chillout music. The "music" in a song tends to be more important than the beats and rhythm and that is what really defines this style. Rich, complex melodies that invoke emotion are key to Progressive music and this month's episode is an example of just that... at a slower tempo.
