clouds in my coffee - an ambient morning mix (MP3)

I made this latest mix for our annual trip to northern Wisconsin. I usually try to make one stargazing mix & one morning mix. The stargazing mix will be posted soon.

This is the morning mix, to be listened to while drinking coffee & reading the morning paper. To go with the morning coffee & sunlight reflecting off the calm lake waters, this music is suitably light.

The majority of the tunes are new, most are from 2008. Some old favorites with new music make the mix, including Max Ritcher, Yellow 6, Marconi Union, Milieu & Goldmund. New discoveries include Shirk, bvdub & Segue.

So grab a cup, put your feet up & enjoy. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

The music in this mix has a sort of subdued, orchestral fell to it. I started thinking about this mix listening to the new Deaf Center release. Layers of strings create a beautiful, melancholy experience. That pretty much describes the rest of the music in this mix.

All of the music in this mix is new, either 2007 or 2008, except for the Andrew Deutsch cut which is from 2005(although it is new to me).

Artists include Deaf Center, Stars of the Lid, Jasper TX, MWVM, Svarte Greiner, Bersarin Quartet and more. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

All the music in this mix, retroact 1.0, is at least 10 years old. Structures from Silence is from 1984! The Aphex Twin cut is from 1994. I cheated with a couple of tracks, such as Tollefson & Vidna/Pearce, that are from 1999. Other ambient artists included are Saul Stokes, Thom Brennan, Biosphere, Brian Eno and more.
light cycles (MP3)

After a very long absence I am finally posting a new mix--light cycles. I love repetition in music–-music that uses the constant repetition of notes or themes or sounds as a basic structure to the composition. I wanted to put together a mix where all of the pieces used repetition as a major part of the cut. I also wanted to use pieces that had an “ambient” feel to them but that also were bright or upbeat. The title of the mix was inspired by the movie Tron. light cycles starts out fairly slow and quiet but becomes more vibrant as it goes along. Near the end it almost rocks out with an amazing piece I stumbled across by Can. The Can piece Future Days uses repetition to great effect. This piece is also cool because it was done back in 1973 but still sounds amazingly contemporary. I hope you enjoy light cycles. Like the last several mixes it is somewhat of a departure from the typical ambient drift and drone but I think it still evokes “ambient-ness” throughout the piece.
Sequential Circuits (MP3)

I don't really like berlin school music much anymore. I used to love that style. The first electronic music that I bought was Tangerine Dream & Jean Michel Jarre. I liked both of those artists for a long time. Eventually I think I just became bored with that style of electronic music.

Recently, however, I've been re-discovering some berlin-type music. It started with the latest Steve Roach release, Arc of Passion. I've been enjoying the album quite a bit so I dug up some other berlin school or nearly berlin tunes to throw into a mix.

Of course there is a cut from Arc of Passion as well as another Roach tune, "Sundial", which I absolutely love. Add in some old T-Dream, Klaus Schulze, Richard Pinhas(3 tunes) and I'm good to go. The Tangerine Dream cuts are from an old cassette that I had of "Hyperborea" which I used to play constantly 10 to 15 years ago. The mix also includes Arp, Solvent, Detroit Escalator Co. & Robert Rich. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

A mixtape of sad songs. While I was gathering music for my Desolation Angels mix, I was originally going to have both vocal and instrumental tracks. Once I started putting it together, however, I felt that having a mix of just instrumental and operatic cuts was best. So, I decided to put all of the vocal tracks left over from Desolation Angels together in their own mix which became Tears in Rain. The title is taken from the film Blade Runner. Tracklisting, links, cover art and music score available on my blog (see Source below). This mix is dedicated to my friend Katie, gone too long. - Source Site:http://hydrogencafe.blogspot.com/

There were some excellent releases in 2007, so I thought I'd feature some in a new mix.

My favorite ambient recording of the year was Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline. I know there are quite a few people who didn't care for the cd, but I love it. I like the more orchestral feel. I like that SOTL relies less & less on synths. A beautiful record.

Artists in this mix include Paul Bradley, Eneralds, Adam Pacione, Northern, Dakota Suite, Tim Hecker, Taylor Deupree, Alio Die, Rameses III, Kiln and more. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

This new mix is all guitar based music. I decided to do a new guitar mix because I seem to have come across a lot of good guitar music lately. I stole the title from a track that appears in the mix by twinsistermoon.

All the tracks on this mix are new, from either 2006 or 2007.
Artists include Robert Fripp, Meursault, Oren Armbachi, Wooden Spoon, Christopher Flores, Peter Wright and more.
Some is ambient, some is pretty, some is droney(is that a word?), all of it laid back.

I hope you enjoy it. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

Netlabel Ambient Mix (MP3)

I've gone on another binge of downloading music from netlabels. You know how the net is...one link leads you to another and then another and another and the next thing you know, you've download 10 free releases.

Free is obviously a huge attraction for most netlabel releases. With some of the recordings, it's a good thing they are free. It's not that they are bad, just that I probably won't come back to them again and again in the future. However, some releases are very good. Nest, released earlier this year on Serein is an excellent recording. Marsen Jules has two Autoplate releases, Yara & Lazy Sunday Funerals, which I highly recommend.

I haven't really had time to digest all the new music yet, but I thought I'd put together a quick mix using all netlabel albums that I've downloaded in the last couple of weeks. - Source Site:http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/

Here is the very first true “mixup” I did last year. Tea Time at Brian Eno’s House is based on an idea of being invited to tea at Brian Eno’s house and what one might hear from his in-house sound installation. I tried to approach the mix in an “Eno-esque” fashion, building track upon track. The foundation of the mix is made up of long-form Eno cuts (Neroli, Thursday Afternoon, etc.) that play at very low levels throughout the mix. On top of that are Quiet American field recordings that fade in and out. On top of that are various Eno and other artist tracks mixed end to end and sometimes together. So, at any point in the mix, there are 2-5 things playing at the same time. The Eno speaking parts are from a long interview with him. I cut pieces at random from the track. I then assembled those pieces together at random throughout the mix. So, you get Eno speaking in “nonsense words” that make sense in a wierd way. - Source Site:http://hydrogencafe.blogspot.com/

The title of this mix, Book of Dreams, is taken from a book by Jack Kerouac. I tried to make this mix dream-like, having pieces of music float from one into another and fade out then back in again later as often happens with dreams. The music overall is very quiet with both ambient and acoustic elements present with a heavy reliance on strings (violin, cello). There is multi-level mixing and several field recordings that whisper and play in the background like voices and distant sounds in dreams. The jpeg “score” for this mix is included in the Cover Art and Score Zip file which can be found on my blog below. - Source Site:http://hydrogencafe.blogspot.com/
