Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.2 (MP3)
The second volume of our '21st Century Afro' series begins its trip with a peaceful afro-ethio-cuban trip from Lightning Head, then heads directly into heavy afro-kraut-jazz from Nomo, a collective from Michigan developing quite an unique sound. After another instant afrosoul classic taken from The Budos Band's masterpiece, the mix navigates into supafunky ethio-jazz from The Lions, a Los Angeles collective of musicians you may also find playing in Breakestra, Connie Price and the Keystones, Orgone, Madlib's Sound Directions, Plant Life, Clutchy Hopkins, the Greyboy allstars... Things then get more focused with a devastating pamphlet from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80. The Shawn Lee apparition in this selection which comes afterwards is quite a surprise, but since the multi-instrumentalist genius decided to go global on his latest album, there's no reason to pass out on it. The same goes for the closing track, the hard-hitting Afrobeat drum-powered 'Platypus Strut' by Ohmega Watts - with the help of members of the Breakestra/Connie Price/Antibalas... it's a small world.

Loik - Charles Is The One Vol.1 (MP3)
Charles Stepney is one of the major contributors to black music's evolution in the 60's and 70's. Vibraphonist, then arranger and one genius of a producer: The Dells, Muddy Waters, Rotary Connection, Earth Wind & Fire, Deniece Williams, he is the one who discovered the angelic Minnie Ripperton and the soulful Terry Callier when he was producer for the cult chicagoan label Cadet. Stepney is all about the orchestrations and arrangements, with their completely unique psychedelic flamboyance. Check here his version of 'Dear Prudence' (the Beatles) by Ramsey Lewis or the brilliant 'Black Gold' from Phil Upchurch.
