ABL:Radio - A Game Of Notes - Mixed by Dr.Rock'n'Shock (MP3)
If you've followed ABL:Radio for some time, you'd know that we occasionally veer off into hip-hop land. This week we have a mix by Dion Corbett who previously did the "Environ Environment" mix as DJ Spankie Hazard. For this mix he adopted the alias Dr.Rock'n'Shock. Dion describes his effort as "an exploration of humor in music." What you will find on this episode is one hour and eighteen minutes chock full of outstanding hip-hop classics from throughout the 80s and 90s with tracks from Kool Kieth, Jeru The Damaja, Grand Mixer D.S.T. and much, much more. Enjoy!

ABL:Radio - Rarefied Splendor - Mixed by HipGnosis (MP3)
Before returning to our established troupe of DJs, we though it would be nice to drop another splendid guest into your mp3 player. This week's episode my be a little shorter than usual, but it's jam packed with heavenly mix of experimental hip-hop beats brought to you by HipGnosis (Eric Young). Since '96, Eric has been DJing and tinkering with electronic music. His early influences range from the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd, to minimal techno and acid house. More recently, he adopted the name HipGnosis and embarked on a quest to infuse some of the energy and sounds of electronic music into the world of hip-hop. In 2005, he released "META," the first album under his new name. In '06 Eric formed his own independent record label, HipGnosis Music, where he released his own music and the works of other artists. While you won't find his own music on today's episode, you will get a sense of his foundations and what direction he's headed. In coming weeks, we will have a follow-up containing selections from his own label. I'm looking forward to it!

ABL:Radio - Funk Junky - Mixed by DJ Jason Schell (MP3)
Listening to Jason Schell's Funk Junkies is like listening to someone flip an old-school funk radio dial every 30 seconds and--instead of getting the crap one usually gets on the radio--actually moving from good song to good song. You'll most likely recognize the tracks and in this case it's a good thing, but please don't burst out into song like some annoying drunken frat boy.
Genres: breakbeat, funk, hip-hop

ABL:Radio - The 47 Record Sermon - Mixed by DJ Jason Schell (MP3)
This is Jason's second guest appearance on the podcast. Jason hails from Seattle, Wa., where he's an artist, an art teacher and a DJ. Jason, come on down, welcome back to ABrooklynLife! For his first appearance, we discussed the meaning of a turntablist. I'll trust you remember the particulars, but do enjoy the wild ride through hip-hop and booty shakin' musical history as Jason takes you through a dizzying 47 records in 80 minutes.

ABL:Radio - Home Skooled - Mixed by Jason Schell (HTML→MP3)
ABrooklynLife has been bringing you DJs every week, but this edition breaks new ground. We are bringing you a living, breathing turtablist. What makes a turntablist, you ask? Well, you will just have to listen to the podcast! (I'll give you a clue, though. Expect everything from old-school hip-hop to new-school party jams, and with Jason it's always moving from one booty-shaking funky track to the next.)
ABL:Radio - Boogie Down Brooklyn - Mixed by DJ Duckcomb (HTML→MP3)
Dj Duckcomb-- " 'Boogie Down Brooklyn' represents a few years worth of hardcore record collecting and digging around the great borough of Brooklyn. I feel it represents the musical and cultural diversity of Brooklyn. Everything from ESG-sampling 80s hip-hop to a deep acid house to weird avant 80s funk by downtown NYC 80s legends like Arthur Russell and Peter Gordon to disco performed by Carribean transplants to plenty of funny disco and boogie sounds. All records are either about Brooklyn or are on tiny Brooklyn indie labels, and most were dug up in Brooklyn ... and yes the final track is a cover of the Who on "Slope Records" out of Park Slope, 1975!"
